George Dewey was Born Dec 26th 1837 in Montpelier, VT.

At the young age of 14 Dewey was enrolled in the old Military Academy at Norwich, Vermont.

Appointed to the Naval Academy in 1854. Sixty entered his class, but only 15 graduated in in 1858 with Dewey at #5.

Dewey served on dozens of ships rising through the ranks as a Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander, a Captain, a Commodore, a Rear Admiral and finally an Admiral - with many diverse assignments from hydrographic surveys to the inspection of lighthouses.

On April 24th 1898 war is declared between the United States and Spain

On April 30th, 1898 Commander Dewey and his squadron forced the entrance to Manilla Bay. The Spanish fleet was attacked and destroyed off Cavite.

On March 1899 Dewey is appointed Admiral of the Navy by President McKinley.

On January 16th, 1917, Admiral Dewey died at his home on K Street in Washington, D.C. He lies in the Arlington National Cemetery, having served his country well.
